For Soviet Jews, glasnost meant renewed anti-Semitism and an urgent need to leave the USSR. To leave, they required help. Operation Exodus was an effort by the American Jewish community to raise $540 million to rescue Soviet Jews. In Chicago, there was a need to raise awareness, rally organizations, and dispel stereotypes. The themeline “Never Again is Now” was used to tie the memory of the Holocaust to the hardships experienced by Soviet Jews. The operation raised nearly $48 million in Chicago and $1 billion nationwide while helping to rescue one million Soviet Jews.
